At the end of a gravel washing station, tradition allows any who want to pan for gems which may have slipped through

Byon

A bucket is hoisted from the mine's depths filled with byon, or gem-bearing gravel. The mixture is washed to rinse away dirt and fine particles, and the remaining gravel is then carefully searched for the tell-tale color of precious gems.
