The Pyaung Gaung area of the  northern Mogok valley is now probably the world's top source of this fascinating gem.   There are two principal mining sites in Pyaung Gaung, with the newer area producing  stones of a yellowish-green shade, and the older area stones of a bottle green hue, with minimal hints of yellow.  While the new mine color is similar to peridot produced in other regions of the world, old mine Burma peridot, with its clarity, richness of color, and remarkable size, is far superior as a gem material.  Many people have never seen peridot of this quality and saturation level, and are both surprised and infatuated after their first encounter.
